We develop a renormalization-group formalism for non-renormalizable theories and apply it to Einstein gravity theory coupled to a scalar field with the Lagrangian L = √ g [RU(φ) − 1 2 G(φ) gμν ∂μφ∂νφ − V (φ)], where U(φ), G(φ) and V (φ) are arbitrary functions of the scalar field. We calculate the one-loop counterterms of this theory and obtain a system of renormalization-group equations in partial derivatives for the functions U, G and V playing the role of generalized charges which substitute for the usual charges in multicharge theories. In the limit of a large but slowly varying scalar field and small spacetime curvature this system gives the asymptotic behaviour of the generalized charges compatible with the conventional choice of these functions in quantum cosmological applications. It also demonstrates in the over-Planckian domain the existence of the Weyl-invariant phase of gravity theory asymptotically free in gravitational and cosmological constants.

Quantum gravity is analyzed from the viewpoint of the renormalization group. The analysis is based on methods introduced by J. Polchinski concerning the perturbative renormalization with flow equations. In the first part of this work, the program of renormalization with flow equations is reviewed and then extended to effective field theories that have a finite UV cutoff. This is done for a scal...

Nonperturbative renomalization group for Einstein gravity with matter

we investigate the exact renormalization group (RG) in Einstein gravity coupled to N-component scalar field, working in the effective average action formalism and background field method. The truncated evolution equation is obtained for the Newtonian and cosmological constants. We have shown that screening or antiscreening behaviour of the gravitational coupling depends cricially on the choice ...

The structure of the UV divergencies in higher dimensional nonrenormalizable theories is analysed. Based on renormalization operation and renormalization group theory it is shown that even in this case the leading divergencies (asymptotics) are governed by the one-loop diagrams the number of which, however, is infinite. Explicit expression for the one-loop counter term in an arbitrary D-dimensi...

Asymptotic Safety, and Quantum Einstein Gravity∗

These lecture notes provide a pedagogical introduction to a specific continuum implementation of the Wilsonian renormalization group, the effective average action. Its general properties and, in particular, its functional renormalization group equation are explained in a simple scalar setting. The approach is then applied to Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG). The possibility of constructing a fund...

Asymptotic safety in Einstein gravity and scalar-fermion matter.

Within the functional renormalization group approach we study the effective quantum field theory of Einstein gravity and one self-interacting scalar coupled to N(f) Dirac fermions. We include in our analysis the matter anomalous dimensions induced by all the interactions and analyze the highly nonlinear beta functions determining the renormalization flow. We find the existence of a nontrivial f...
